JOSÉ NAVAS – CREATION WORKSHOP

May 28 – June 1st + June 4-8. 2:30 pm

Born in Venezuela in 1965, José Navas has been based in Québec since 1991. Founder and artistic director of Compagnie Flak, José Navas creates abstract group pieces and contemporary ballet pieces, as well as dances in his solo shows, charged with emotion.

Choreographer in residency for Ballet BC in Vancouver since the summer of 2010, he successfully delivered his first work on pointe and the creation of a new version ofGiselle figures in his upcoming projects. His work has been presented in 40 countries in the Americas, Europe, and Asia.

Abstraction, sobriety, intensity, and depth are the words that best characterize his current work.

The last years have witnessed a change in José Navas’ choreographies for group. There has been a focus on abstract movement as well as an increased interest in classical technique while still retaining the sense of organic movement characteristic of his solo work.

During these two weeks of studio sessions, dancers will be participating in movement research as part of the first phase of development of a new group piece. The aim will be to complete a working version of a segment of the piece by the end of the two-week period.
