Born in Venezuela in 1965, José Navas has been based in Québec since 1991. Founder and artistic director of Compagnie Flak, José Navas creates abstract group pieces and contemporary ballet pieces, as well as dances in his solo shows, charged with emotion.
Choreographer in residency for Ballet BC in Vancouver since the summer of 2010, he successfully delivered his first work on pointe and the creation of a new version of Giselle figures in his upcoming projects. His work has been presented in 40 countries in the Americas, Europe, and Asia.
Abstraction, sobriety, intensity, and depth are the words that best characterize his current work.
The technique class offered by José is based on Cunningham principles of space and isolation of the body. Divided in three parts, the class will warm up the body very slowly, focusing on weight, gravity, and breath. Following the warm up, dancers will concentrate on basic technique exercises, focusing on personal logic, expansion of lines, and always the breath. They will continue with learning original phrases or repertoire from Compagnie Flak, which will challenge coordination, speed, use of space, and personal endurance. The class will resume with a brief relaxation-meditation exercise.
