May 28 – June 1st. 11:30 am – 1:30 pm.
Peter James has been active as a physical actor and multidisciplinary creator for the past 25 years. His research on movement, voice, and text have led him to perform on stage in a variety of disciplines such as dance, theatre, multimedia, circus, performance, and cabarets. These multiple opportunities have led him to perform with Catherine Tardif, Andrew Harwood, Brouhaha Danse, and Alain Francoeur. He has also collaborated with Guy Alloucherie (Cie HVDZ France), Céline Bonnier, Nathalie Claude, Jean-Frédéric Messier, Élizabeth Ancion (Gurgum, Belgium), Cirque Éloize, Mélissa Von Vépy (Moglice Von Verx, France), and Modern Times Theatre to name a few.
Peter has created so far three solos and a cabaret entitled Ze Psykotyk Project, which he orchestrates with 7 other accomplices. He works on TV and movie projects and teaches acting/presence throughout the city of Montréal. He is also the École nationale de cirque’s Artistic Advisor.
This workshop will focus on presence, quality of presence, basically, the person in front of me. I search, explore, work from, with, for, and on you. There will be free improvisations, led with or without accessories. We will focus on states of being, strangeness of being, extreme limits of being, and imperfection of being. We will explore the concepts of object/subject, availabilities, transfer, triggers, manipulation, acting/non-acting, developing characters, minimalism, and expressionism (big, grotesque, grimace). We will approach themes like unbearable lightness of being, flaws, weaknesses, accidents, uneasiness, shadow and light, time and length; what is beyond us, the unspeakable, what is left unsaid, the invisible. In short, something between the body, words, voice, and silence. Being oneself in life as well as on stage.
